Moated Castle in Fuerstlich Drehna

The moated castle was originally built as a Slavic castle in the 13th-century and in the 2nd half of the 16th-century, it was by in large new constructed. This goes back to the takeover of the rule of Drehna, through the family von Minckwitz in the year 1521. They had the castle rebuilt and equipped it with a new moat and three fortified towers.

Over time and because of totally different owners, a range different annexes and were added to the castle.

Fürstlich Drehna had a special upswing through the last last three reigning families, Earl zu Promnitz (1697 - 1793), Earl zu Lynar (1793 - 1877) and the Bremer shipowner family Wätjen (from 1877). When the then Earl zu Lynar, received royal status in 1807, the village got the name Fürstlich Drehna around 1860.
After 1945, the whole estate became government property due to a land reform. Until 1986, it served as a rest home, political party school, forestry school and lastly as a youth working yard.

Since then, the castle has stood empty. The community Fürstlich Drehna took over more or less all buildings and the real estate of the castle ensemble in 1990.

Since 1995, the Brandenburgische Schlösser GmbH has become the owner and has restored the castle as well as other listed buildings in Fürstlich Drehna.
